Open Source

Open source = Peace of mind

The big announcement we made in September is that our new VastPark Player (Now available in the Downloads) is open source. For now what that means is that our core libraries used in the Player are released under the GPL 2 license. VastPark Server is also now released under the GPL 2.

VastPark has developed a virtual worlds platform designed to support rich virtual conferencing and training applications, immersive visualization of products, data, business processes, architecture, gameplay and 3d multiuser environments and to enable people to extend the platform for their own purposes. Our mission is to better meet the needs of our customers by making our software based on open specifications and ensuring freedom and peer review by making our source code available. We want to enable any developer to use the VastPark platform, whether that developer is an open source developer, or a commercial developer, or both.

Vastpark Pty Ltd provides its software under a number of flexible licenses, designed to meet the particular requirements of different types of users:

For Open Source Projects

  • If you are developing and distributing open source software under the GNU General Public License v2.0 (“GPL 2”), then you are free to include VastPark's source code under the GPL 2 License.
  • You are invited to contribute to the development of VastPark.

For Commercial OEMs, ISVs and VARs

VastPark provides its code libraries under a multiple license model designed to meet the development and distribution needs of both commercial distributors (such as OEMs, ISVs and VARs) and open source projects. OEMs, ISVs, and VARs can distribute VastPark's official binary releases. VastPark also provides a flexible Commercial License for those who distribute VastPark's source code with their proprietary products, and do not wish to license and distribute their source code under the GPL 2. See our Commercial page.

Philosophy

VastPark believes that open source is a disruptive force for helping enterprises innovate and improve their productivity without being locked in by a proprietary vendor and ultimately leading to greater business transparency, interoperability and productivity that is a benefit globally. See our 10 Commandments.

Open source code licenses do not alter VastPark's and everyone else's rights to retain their trademarks and copyright. Trademarks and copyrighted content remain the property of their respective owners and they have the right to determine who may use their copyrights and trademarks and for what purposes.
